Adele Wearing is a force behind many new and vibrant anthologies. She is the editor of ‘Weird Noir’ together with K.A. Laity which is available here. And she will shortly be releasing ‘Requiem’.

Adele met me at The Slaughterhouse where we talked about Weird Noir and genre fiction.

Tell us about Weird Noir.

‘Weird Noir’ was the brain child of my friend, writer and the books editor Kate Laity who clearly has a dark and twisted mind. She wanted to see what happened if you let authors take themes from weird fiction and Lovecraftian horror and set it in the noir environment. It turns out what happens is a crazy kind of wonderful. Werewolf PI’s, demons downtown and Kraken on the menu. When she put it to me as an idea I think we both knew it was perfect. This was exactly the sort of thing I wanted to do with Fox Spirit, play around in genre fiction, pick up the things that might not have an obvious broad market but were too good not to happen. I’m delighted with how well the book has been received and both photo FoxSpiritLogo_200x83.pngKate and the cover artist S.L. Johnson have said yes to coming back in 2013 with ‘Noir Carnival’.

How would you elevator pitch the anthology?

I can’t do it better than Kate’s original pitch, after all it sold it to me and an amazing group of writers

‘On the gritty backstreets of a crumbling city, tough dames and dangerous men trade barbs, witticisms and a few gunshots. But there’s a new twist where
urban decay meets the eldritch borders of another world: WEIRD NOIR.

Featuring thugs who sprout claws and fangs, gangsters with tentacles and the occasional succubus siren. The ambience is pure noir but the characters aren’t just your average molls and mugs—the vamps might just be vamps. It’s Patricia Highsmith meets Shirley Jackson or Dashiell Hammett filtered through H. P. Lovecraft. Mad, bad and truly dangerous to know, but irresistible all the same.’

Tell us about Un Bound.

Un:Bound was a review site I set up and ran with help from friends for a number of years. Not to be confused with a publisher that started using the name more recently. I publish under Fox Spirit.

What inspires you about genre fiction today?

The people and the stories. There are some amazing books out there and so many incredible new writers coming through. Go to any event and spend a couple of days surrounded by the people writing genre fiction, published or not, and I defy anyone not to come away excited. Lou Morgan just blew a hole through typical angel demon fantasy with the awesome ‘Blood & Feathers’, Karen Davies’ ‘The Red Knight’ has some of the best battle scenes I’ve read. The short stories we’ve seen from Chloe Yates have been brilliantly witty and original. Obviously I think all the Fox Spirit writers are amazing. I’ve been lucky to work with incredible people on the books and the anthologies, some well known, others new, but all talented and passionate. Honestly it’s hard not to be inspired.

Thanks Adele for an insightful and engaging interview.
