His name may not mean much to many of you but Captain Beefheart has died.
He was a worthy iconoclast who grew up in the same part of Maryland as Frank Zappa.
Don Van Vliet was his real name and he recorded some amazing songs.
I want to commemorate him here.
I will always remember being stranded at Syracuse airport and having little else to do than drink bumped into a DJ.
I was with a lady who could have tempted St. Anthony and I became inspired.
The DJ and I got into a Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart fest at the bar much to the delight of the barmaid.
Let’s hear it for Captain Beefheart.

I even included him in my story ‘Desultory In Blue’ here

we’re all unique, I know, but some are more unique than others. i reckon Don was out there in a world of his own. he’s one of the few people in the world i’d really have liked to get inside the head of, would have swapped minds for a couple of days – imagine the torrents of poetry, music and images that i would have drowned in.
Nice tribute, Richard. I also liked some of his paintings like “Crepe and Black Lamps.”
